Course Overview

The Master of Social Work (Qualifying) is a two-year full-time equivalent course. The course meets the Australian Social Work and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS 2023) and is an entry qualification into the social work profession. Social work is an academic practice-based profession that promotes social justice, inclusion and wellbeing.

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the Master of Social Work (Qualifying), graduates will be able to:

Knowledge

  • Critically reflect on theory and social work practice demonstrating knowledge, skills and values that meet the ASWEAS (2023).
  • Integrate knowledge of concepts of human rights, social justice, law and the human services system, with the social work approach.
  • Critically reflect on social work’s engagement with an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their ways of knowing, being and doing.

Skills

  • Design, implement and reflect on social work interventions with individuals, families, groups, and communities across a range of contexts.
  • Apply and evaluate decision making processes and professional judgments using social work values and ethical frameworks (AASW Code of Ethics 2020).
  • Critically review and demonstrate culturally safe practices and recognise the lived experience of service users and families.

Application of Knowledge and Skills

  • Generate and use research to advance, apply and maintain evidence-informed social work practice to deal effectively with complex issues affecting individuals, groups and communities.
  • Identify own learning needs for effective leadership in community and health services settings and develop strategies for lifelong career and professional development.

    Graduates of Master of Social Work (Qualifying) will qualify as professional social workers and will be eligible to become members of the Australian Association of Social Workers. They may also be eligible to apply to work as a social worker overseas. Social workers work across a range of community services and health sector jobs. These include:

    • Social Worker Defence Community Organisation (designated title)
    • Child Protection Worker
    • Social Worker aged care
    • Social Worker Disability Services

    • Private practice – includes Medicare funded workers through Better Access for Mental Health Services
  • Admission Requirements

    Admission to the Master of Health Management is based on the following requirements:

    General Entry

    Applicants to the Master of Social Work Qualifying (MSW(Q)) are required to have completed a relevant three-year AQF Level 7-degree (bachelor’s degree) course that contains at least one year, or the equivalent of full-time studies in the social and behavioural sciences.

    Special or Alternative Admission Arrangements

      Applicant to the Master of Social Work (Qualifying) (MSWQ) who have completed bachelor’s degree (not in the relevant field) are required to complete Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Social Science or Behavioural Science or equivalent.

      The College offers a bridging course, the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (GCSS), for students who do not meet the requirement of at least one year of full-time study, or its equivalent, in the social and behavioural sciences.

      Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (GCSS) may be eligible articulate into Master of Social Work Qualifying (MSW(Q))

      International Students

      Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

    1. English Language Requirements

      Applicants with international qualifications not delivered in English must demonstrate English equivalency as follows:

      • Academic IELTS: 7.0 or higher overall with no band lower than 7.0; or
      • IBT (Internet-based TOEFL): Overall Score of 94, where reading and minimum listening section is 24, writing is 27 and speaking is 23; or
      • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Overall score 185, writing and speaking 185; or
      • PTE Academic Module with a minimum score of 65 with a writing and speaking section minimum of 65.
    2. Course Delivery

      Course is delivered in a blended mode to provide maximum flexibility for students. The CHS utilises Canvas LMS to deliver technology enhanced learning experiences and also to enable self- directed collaboration and engagement by students. By thoughtfully integrating face-to-face with online learning experiences, the blended learning experience combines the strengths in both modes to foster a community of inquiry approach while at the same time encouraging independent learning.

      Online learning option is available for all Units to domestic students, particularly those who are remotely located, including indigenous students.

    3. Course Structure

      Qualification for this award requires the successful completion of 96 credit points or 12 units of study including two Field Education Practicum Units of 500 hours each. See Course Structure table below:

      Note: Prior to commencing the first practicum, students are required to undertake and have completed a National Police Check and Working with Children Check. For students wishing to undertake placement in a Health facility, they will need to provide proof of relevant vaccinations before commencing placement (see NSW Health Department website for relevant vaccinations).

    4. FEE-HELP (For Domestic Students)

      FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan available to eligible students enrolled in CHS Courses in order to help pay all or part of their tuition fees.

      FEE-HELP is available for all Units of Study for eligible students.
