Course Overview

The course provides a pathway for prospective students who intend to study social work but do not have the pre-requisite social science knowledge in their undergraduate degree. It provides for students to develop knowledge of sociology, psychology, Australian society and academic and professional communication that are the building blocks for the social work course at the Master’s level.

Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Social Science, students will be able to:

  • Articulate and critically evaluate the relevance of sociological theories for social work theory and practice.
  • Conceptualise the underpinning psychological theories for social work knowledge and practice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key issues of Australian society.
  • Utilize cognitive and communication skills to relate to diversity of people and cultures.

    The course has been designed to enhance the students’ ability to undertake the Master of Social Work Qualifying by providing them with basic social science knowledge. It is also designed to enhance critical and reflective professional practice in the human services sector.  This will enhance the students’ ability to successfully complete the Master of Social Work (Qualifying).

  • Course Delivery

    Course is delivered in a blended mode to provide maximum flexibility for students. The CHS utilises Canvas LMS to deliver technology enhanced learning experiences and also to enable self- directed collaboration and engagement by students. By thoughtfully integrating face-to-face with online learning experiences, the blended learning experience combines the strengths in both modes to foster a community of inquiry approach while at the same time encouraging independent learning.

    Online learning option is available for all Units to domestic students, particularly those who are remotely located, including indigenous students.

  • Course Structure

    Qualification for this award requires the successful completion of 24 credit points by completing the following units:

  • Admission Requirements

    Applicants to the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (GCSS) are required to have completed a three-year AQF Level 7-degree (bachelor’s degree) or any Graduate Certificate (AQF Level 8) course.

    Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (GCSS) may be eligible to articulate into Master of Social Work Qualifying (MSW(Q))

  • English Language Requirements (For International Students)

    Applicants with international qualifications not delivered in English must demonstrate English equivalency as follows:

    • IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or provide an equivalent English proficiency test result.
  • FEE-HELP (For Domestic Students)

    FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan available to eligible students enrolled in CHS Courses in order to help pay all or part of their tuition fees.

    FEE-HELP is available for all Units of Study for eligible students.
